LifeStraw – makes contaminated water safe to drink
Like many an outdoors person, I have tried a range of water filter systems over the years, but it has been a while since I came across such an innovative product as the LifeStraw, a 2-stage filtration personal water system that is simple to use, and extremely effective. Once at a water source, it is a simply a question of submerging half of the unit into water for 15 seconds, before taking a few sips to allow the liquid to reach the mouth. You then blow the water back out through the LifeStraw once only in order to remove any trapped air. Then you can start drinking normally. The cleaning process is such that once the water has entered the unit, the activated carbon capsule reduces chlorine, bad taste and odour, and reduces organic chemical contaminants. The water then passes through a second stage hollow fibre membrane which traps pathogens inside, allowing only safe water to escape. In essence, it removes 99.9999 per cent of bacteria such as E.coli and protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, etc.). Chemical free, the LifeStraw is made of durable stainless steel, and required no electrical power or batteries.
